Kongsberg Maritime and Partners launch Remote DP Operations Pilot
Recently announced at Nor-Shipping in Oslo, Kongsberg Maritime, Solstad, Østensjø, DeepOcean, and Remota have formed a partnership to initiate a pilot project exploring remote Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations in the offshore sector. The pilot, scheduled to begin later this year aboard the offshore vessel Normand Sentinel, will assess how remote technology can improve operational flexibility and create expanded recruitment opportunities within the maritime industry. By shifting DP operations to shore, the project aims to attract a broader and more diverse workforce.
The shore-based DP operator will be stationed at a Remote Operations Centre (ROC) operated by Remota, utilizing connectivity and cybersecurity infrastructure to ensure secure and seamless functionality.
This initiative seeks to advance remote maritime operations, focusing on efficiency and adaptability. By leveraging new technology, the project will evaluate the feasibility of remote DP2 operations and explore a more flexible operational model.
In the first phase, two vessels—Solstad’s Normand Sentinel and Østensjø’s Edda Freya—will be involved, maintaining full onboard DP teams for safety and comparative data collection.
? Lisa Edvardsen Haugan, President of Kongsberg Maritime, stated: “Together with our partners, we aim to challenge established norms in the maritime industry through innovative remote technology and proven solutions.”
? Lars Peder Solstad, CEO of Solstad, remarked: “By combining new technologies with operational experience, we see the opportunity to transition DP operations from offshore to onshore.”
? Kristian H. Vea, CEO of Østensjø, noted: “This collaboration reinforces our commitment to advancing remote offshore operations.”
? Øyvind Mikaelsen, CEO of DeepOcean, added: “Aligned with our partners, we aim to stay at the forefront of remote and uncrewed operations to improve efficiency for offshore energy operators.”
? Sveinung Soma, CEO of Remota, concluded: “This partnership positions Remota to offer DP from Remote Operation Centres to a wider market, improving cost efficiency and crew flexibility.”
The collaboration has been formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
