NYK invests in Oceanic Constellations to advance USV Development
On February 5, NYK made an equity investment in Oceanic Constellations Inc. (OC), headquartered in Kamakura, Japan, through a third‑party allotment of new shares. The funds from this investment are expected to support OC’s efforts to establish a mass‑production framework for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and related initiatives.
NYK Line (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) is a Japan‑based global logistics enterprise with a primary focus on marine transportation, which accounts for more than 99% of the country’s trade volume. Operating as part of the NYK Group, the company provides logistics services that extend beyond shipping, offering integrated solutions to support global trade. NYK Line applies ESG‑based management by advancing its core businesses and developing new areas to address sustainability and evolving market needs, while contributing to society through initiatives such as decarbonization and efficiency improvements.
OC, an ocean‑tech startup, is working to build a mass‑production framework for USVs within the next few years. Large‑scale production and social implementation of USVs are intended to enable new marine infrastructure that contributes to ocean surveillance, disaster prevention, and communications, while enhancing competitiveness in the maritime industry.
In addition to USV technologies, OC has capabilities in integrated environmental simulation technologies that reproduce marine environments for USV operations. These technologies can also be applied to feasibility verification and accuracy improvements in developing an offshore recovery system for reusable rockets, a project for which NYK has been selected under the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Space Strategy Fund initiative.
In December 2025, NYK concluded a service agreement with OC for software development of integrated simulations and scenario validation under the Space Strategy Fund initiative. In October 2025, Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, signed a joint demonstration agreement with OC. Through these initiatives, NYK has been strengthening its relationship with OC, aiming to acquire technical expertise and reinforce its business foundation in both marine and space fields.
Through this investment, NYK intends to deepen its partnership with OC, accelerate development in space‑related businesses, and promote co‑creation to address societal challenges related to the oceans.
