OpenBridge 6.0 released

Date: 04 Feb 2025 Author: Raymond

Ocean Industries Concept lab, the developer of OpenBridge, the widely recognized open-source design guideline for maritime user interfaces, announced the release of newest version of OpenBridge 6.0. Building on the success of version 5.0, this major update offers enhanced usability, clarity, and flexibility—enabling maritime stakeholders to create consistent, modern, and regulation-compliant user experiences across vessels, offshore facilities, and other industrial workplaces.

OpenBridge 6.0 keeps the foundational structure of the previous version but significantly advances all component designs. Notable improvements include:
🔹 optimized Bars and Graphs: Enhanced clarity for data visualizations in critical maritime applications;
🔹 reengineered Maritime Instruments: Introduces many new components, simplified scaling, and fresh design options. Technologies such as sail are now supported;
🔹 new Maritime Maneuvering Section: Provides an entirely new section of map overlays for systems such as DP and Porting;
🔹 updated Automation Section: Reflects growing trends in control rooms and industrial process interfaces;
🔹 advanced Figma Functionality: Easily switch color palettes using Figma variables, streamline design processes, and produce more efficient UI/UX prototypes;
🔹 global Advice and Limits Framework: Most components can now show advice (such as eco or safety) directly in the components;
🔹 overall Polish: All components have been thoroughly evaluated and redrawn for improved clarity; virtually every element has been refined.

🎤 “We are extremely pleased and proud to offer OpenBridge 6.0 as an open-source resource to the maritime community. We set out on a mission nearly a decade ago to change maritime workplace design, and OpenBridge 6.0 is a significant step forward in realizing that vision.” — Professor Kjetil Nordby, Ocean Industries Concept Lab, Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

OpenBridge 6.0 draws on the expertise of 40 industry, governmental, and academic partners, working collaboratively through research projects such as OpenAR, OpenRemote, and OpenZero.

OpenBridge 6.0 has been produced by the research group Ocean Industries Concept Lab at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, which manages all the research projects that build the OpenBridge ecosystem. The new release is anticipated to expand the influence of open innovation in safety-critical industries, providing a stronger foundation for collaboration and best practices.
