Royal Navy receives second Remotely‑Controlled Mine Countermeasures Vessel ‘Adventure’
The UK Royal Navy has received Adventure, the second of four remotely‑controlled boats in the Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) programme. Adventure joins Ariadne, already in service, as part of the Anglo‑French collaboration to counter mine threats with advanced uncrewed systems.
Classed as a ‘primary system’, Adventure can carry payloads including uncrewed survey and mine warfare systems such as SAMDIS, a synthetic aperture sonar vehicle used to rapidly and safely map the seabed. Missions are directed from a portable operations centre, enabling mine warfare experts to manage tasks remotely.
Delivered through OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) , the MMCM programme introduces autonomous mine countermeasures built around crewless systems and an expanded mission suite to enhance safety and effectiveness. The system is designed to clear mines in seas up to State 4 and supports detailed seabed mapping in complex maritime environments.
🎤 Adventure was handed over to the Royal Navy at Turnchapel in Plymouth, with Commodore Michael Wood, Senior Responsible Owner for the UK programme, accepting the vessel. He said ” The arrival of the second craft marked an important step forward – and showed the power of the enterprise – with OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation), Royal Navy, The National Armaments Director Group, Thales and Saab working collaboratively and transparently to one purpose, and responding to the urgent need to prepare this world‑class capability for any operational deployment.”
With the addition of a dedicated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), the system also provides mine identification and neutralisation training at sea, improving mission readiness while keeping personnel out of harm’s way.
